Dear Yogis:
Out with the old, in with the new. Spring is about
change and renewal. I run outside to my garden
searching for any sign – the tip of a daffodil, a green
leaf. I can smell in the earth and air -- Spring is
finally here!
In the spirit of change and renewal, I have decided
to make a career shift. I have begun working with
MindBody Online -- the company that my husband,
Bob, is a partner in, which is the largest provider of
online software to yoga studios, pilates studios, etc.
in the world. I am thrilled to announce I will be
creating/launching a new part of their business,
MindBody University. MindBody University will
provide business development courses and consulting
to Yoga Studios to help them run and grow their
businesses. As many of you know, I created the
phenomenally sucessful and professionally presented
Be Yoga Teacher Training program, of course with
the help of Alan Finger, Rachel Zinman, Jean Koerner,
Kara Sekuler and our other great ISHTA teachers. I
will be taking these skills and experience to create
MindBody University. Having spent the last seven
years teaching teachers how to teach yoga, I look
forward to helping Yoga Studios around the world run
and grow their businesses with MindBody Online and
MindBody University. Our first courses will be offered
in October 2006 in New York and California.
As a result of this new commitment, I will no longer
be teaching classes at Yoga Works. However, I will
be assisting Alan at conferences -- we will be at
the Midwest Yoga conference May 31-June 4 -- and
I will also be co-teaching workshops with Alan, with
dates at Yoga Works soon to be announced. More
retreats are being planned throughout the year,
including a summer weekend in the Hamptons, Mexico
next year and maybe even Europe! I will also
continue to teach my specialty areas in the Yoga
Works Teacher Trainings.
Our trip to Mexico was a huge success as about
45 yogis, young and old, families and singles
descended upon a little piece of paradise in Chacala,
Mexico for a transcendent week of asana, meditation
and relaxation. We are already about 30% reserved
for next year, so sign up now if you want to join us!
One of my favorite teachers, Mark Whitwell, is back -
- teaching both in Mandala Yoga and Dance in
Amagansett and at Yoga Works in the City. Lastly,
in this issue you will find some helpful tips for going
with the flow and moving into Spring!
Those are all the updates for now. Run outside
and smell the flowers -- life is short!
Shanti,
Beverley Murphy
| FLOW INTO SPRING! |
 |
|
The yogis realized that all things in life are
impermanent and the only constant is change. When
we get "stuck" and resist change, we are in
fundamental opposition to the natural flow of life. But
we like things the way they are, the known, and it is
hard for us to accept change. Anything that is new
or different scares us. Even when the change
is positive, it stresses us out! A new job, baby,
marriage, etc are all high on the stress-meter. A
great deal of our suffering is our inability to let go
and move on; but avoiding change blocks us from
growing and discovering the transformative
opportunities that lie in the unknown.
>From the perspectives of most traditional healing
modalities, including Chinese medicine and
Ayurveda (the ancient Indian healing system), the
transition between seasons requires a
change in diet, sleep and other lifestyle habits to
bring us into harmony with the new season. For
spring, these changes are all about making space for
new growth. Physically, we shed our winter baggage
of heavier energy, heavier clothes, even heavier
winter bodies! On an emotional level, we carry
emotional baggage not only about recent events, but
about things that happened YEARS ago that we have
a hard time letting go of. Spring is the perfect time
to explore letting some of this go.
So, here are some tips to help you make space,
accept and stay open to the exciting possibilities
awaiting you in your life:
• Use your yoga to practice letting go of
your resistance, both physical and emotional, to the
natural changing flow of life. In the asana practice,
twists and inversions are a great way to learn how to
move into new things and to change your
perspective. Practicing mindfulness
and becoming fully present in the moment will lessen
your attachment to the past and your concerns
about the future.
• Spring cleaning, inside and out! Rid
yourself of not only physical, but also mental and
emotional clutter by clearing out things you no longer
need from material possessions to relationships,
attitudes, belief systems or jobs.
• Lighten up! Shed those last winter blahs:
initiate a spring diet with early spring vegetables and
change your daily routines to fully open yourself up
to the light, warmth and energy of spring. Even just
adding a short daily walk or waking up a little earlier
can change your awareness and connect you to
spring's revitalizing force.
Let go of the old so you can bring in the new!!!
